What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a procedure in which an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin and muscle. It is directed at myofascial trigger points in the muscle (or muscles that are in spasm), a palpable tender nodule in a taut muscle.
Muscular spasm can be defined as an involuntary contraction of a muscle or muscle group. It is usually the size of a pea and when pressure is applied to the area, tenderness, and referring pain is experienced.
Dry Needling is a scientifically proven form of treatment to treat trigger points.
Myofascial Trigger Points are Often Responsible for Complaints of a Person With:
- Hip Osteoarthritis
- Pain with cervical disc lesions
- Pelvic pain
- Headaches
- Arm pain (tennis and golfers elbow)
- Shoulder impingements
- Hamstring strains
- Buttock and leg pain
- Knee pain
- Calf tightness or cramps
- Ankle sprains
These problems can be a cause of poor posture, work related tension, stress, sporting activity, injuries and poor biomechanics. After a dry needling treatment the area in the muscle which has been treated feels much softer and relaxed and you will feel looser.
